Stamp Collecting

The first stamps of the Netherlands were issued in 1852 and showed a bust of King William III. In 1985 the 10cent denomination of this first series was privately reprinted in several colors on unwatermarked paper by Joh. A. Moesman, whose name appears on the back.

My earliest Dutch stamps are these two 1864 stamps from the second series, also showing King William III. On the left is Scott # 5-A2 10c lake, which is worth $4.00 (used) in the 1993 catalog. On the right is #6-A2 orange, which is listed as $65.00 (used). The paper of this series of stamps varies considerably in thickness. It sometimes is slightly bluish and also vertically ribbed.

But by far my favorite is this unused 1 Guilder stamp issued in 1896 showing Queen Wilhelmina. It is #52-A9 1g brn & ol grn and is worth $180.00
